April 10, 2007     Meeting Minutes

Newport Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee

Striving for a livable community

Members Present: Ken Dennis, Diane Henkels, Dave Teem

Staff: Jeff Bertuleit, Lance Gatchell

Meeting called to order at 5:30 pm and the minutes from the March meeting were read and accepted as written.

Staff Report:

Lance reported that there hasn’t been any news about the TGM plan update to the Newport Transportation System Plan.  There is supposed to be a draft later this month and the NBPAC should be getting a copy of this draft.

The curb extensions on the bay front were described and bike rack designs were presented with the “bike” bike rack design selected as an appropriate rack to be placed near the curb extensions.

JC Market hasn’t committed to installing bike racks but hasn’t said no.  The committee was advised that they shouldn’t press the issue.

The walking route from Nye Beach to the Bay Front will be marked in time for the May Bike/Walk to Work Month events start.  The route map is still a work in progress.

Lance will be meeting with the City Manager about LID funding for sidewalks.

Jeff suggests that the committee update City Council on the committees’ goals and objectives.

Old Business:

Diane reports that preparation for Bike to Work Month is progressing.  She’s met with the City Wellness Committee and the Newport Chamber of Commerce.  A Bike/Walk To Work Proclamation will be on the next council agenda.

Ken Smith has been appointed as a committee member replacing Mary Banvard.

Diane made formal announcement that she is moving out of the area and has notified the Mayor that she is resigning from the committee.  She was thanked for all of the hard work that has been put into BTWM and compiling Newport’s bike/ped ordinances for future revision.  The diversion program that she brought to the attention of Gary Firestone and Jeff Pridgeon will be followed up on by Ken and Dave Teem.

New Business:  No new business

Meeting adjourned at 7:10PM.

Next Meeting:  5:30 PM, May 8th at Newport Parks and Recreation Center.
