Records

In Oregon, a public record "includes any writing containing information relating to the conduct of the public's business, including but not limited to court records, mortgages, and deed records, prepared, owned, used, or retained by a public body regardless of physical form or characteristics." State law provides that

"Writing means handwriting, typewriting, printing, photographing, and every means of recording, including letters, words, pictures, sounds, or symbols or combination thereof, and all papers, maps, files, facsimile, or electronic recordings."

State law further states that "Every person has a right to inspect any public record of a public body in this state, except as otherwise expressly provided by ORS 192.501 to 192.505.

The City of Newport has adopted a public record request policy, procedures, application form, and fee schedule. It can be accessed by clicking on Public Record Request Policies and Procedures , and completing the "Public Records Request Form." Fees for public records are included in the "Public Records Policy," and are subject to change.

The City Recorder is the custodian of city records, and may be contacted by telephone at 541.574.0613, or via e-mail at p.hawker@thecityofnewport.net.
