Detectives

Crime scene preparation and equipmentThe Detective Division of the Newport Police Department is responsible for conducting follow-up investigations that involve serious crimes.

The majority of crimes investigated by this division are felony crimes where alcohol and/or drugs have exacerbated the severity of the crime. Cases that are complex in nature are assigned to detectives. Some of the detective's duties include evidence collection, crime scene processing, interviewing witnesses and suspects, and sex abuse investigations.

The Newport Police Department currently has three detectives. Two detectives perform general investigations from calls initially received by patrol officers. The third detective investigates drug crimes and is assigned to LINT, the Lincoln Interagency Narcotics Team. A fourth position of Detective Sergeant, is currently vacant.

The LINT team is made up of detectives from the Newport Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Lincoln City Police Department and Oregon State Police. Support is also provided by the Lincoln County District Attorney's Office and the Lincoln County Counsel's Office.  This team works on investigations dealing with major drug traffickers in Lincoln County.
